There are many rumours and myths about the eight extraordinary vessels. All of them have one thing in common: it is never clear, how you may recognise in practice, which of the extraordinary vessels need to be treated as they may neither be diagnosed through questioning, nor by means of pulse or tongue diagnostics.

I will show you a method whereby you may recognise with greater certainty, which of the extraordinary vessels will need to be treated in regard to your patients. Once you are familiar with this method, you will realise how often the extraordinary vessels are subject to dysfunction. I have worked in Chinese medicine for over 25 years, and I have been able to pinpoint dysfunctions with extraordinary vessels for around 15 years. In practice, around four out of every five patients – therefore 80% – suffer from a dysfunction with regard to their extraordinary vessels. That is quite a lot.

Another point which has become clear in practice is that if, for example, you are treating a pre-menstrual syndrome where the cause leads back to a Chong Mai dysfunction, this is not recognised, and makes effective treatment far more time consuming, if not impossible.
